My name is Rui Pereira. I’m young professional working in IT since 2000. I like to think of myself as that kind of creative and versatile person that can do a little bit (or a lot) of just about anything related to computers and technology.
My education in Engineering gave me a good mix of tech and biz, and luckily my work has given me the opportunity to put them both to good use.
I really enjoy working in international environments, and I have done so since the beginning of my career.

Currently I’m living in The Netherlands, near Eindhoven, with Cristina, my beautiful wife, which still has the patience to put up with the long hours I spend in front of the computer monitor. By the way, we were born on exactly the same day – I guess it just was meant to be.

Stuff I have worked on

  • Java (lots of it!)
  • Web-based technologies (<warning> big list of buzzwords and acronyms follows</warning>)
    • Servlets, JavaScript, (X)HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP
    • XML, XSL, XSLT
    • Web Services (SOAP, WSDL, UDDI)
  • Web design, portals & CMS
  • Some SOA design and application integration
  • Business Intelligence & Master Data Management
  • Databases & Data Warehousing
    • Both relational and object-oriented (I kid you not)
    • SQL, MDX, OLAP

I also have a few certifications. These come in handy for my work:

If you are interested in a real CV/Résumé for whatever reason, drop me a line at [email protected].

Things that interest me now

  • AJAX and the “Web 2.0″ concepts
  • Digital photography
  • Digital video editing (you should see my home movies, really!)
  • Gaming industry
  • World politics, economics and stock markets

Some facts (in random order…)

  • I gave my first scream on June 23rd 1978 on a nice hospital in Porto, Portugal. Well, I hope it was nice - don’t quite remember it.
  • I love movies. I can’t even begin to count how many movies I have seen. I probably don’t want to know either.
  • Some people say I’m an expert in MDX, but this has not been proven by modern science.
  • When I was a kid, my dream was to someday become an astronaut. Yeah, right, like that was going to happen…
  • The first time I connected to the Internet, I wasn’t impressed at all. My first comment was - “man, this thing is sooo slooow”. Sometimes I still say that - funny, isn’t it?
  • When I was a teenager, I won the first place on the school Math Olympics five years in a row (and a couple of Physics ones). Somehow this is completely irrelevant now, but it made me feel proud at the time :)
  • I got my M. Sc. in Informatics and Computer Engineering, from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, commonly known as FEUP. Highly recommendable.
  • When I graduated I won the “Engineer António de Almeida Foundation” award. This is given to the students with the highest course grades. A big “cheers!” to my mates that received this award with me.
  • When I was around 8, something extraordinary happened - I got a Timex Computer 2068. Everything changed. Life was never the same.
  • I once a co-authored a paper titled “Reducing Rankings of Classifiers by Eliminating Redundant Classifiers”. This was before I graduated. I haven’t worked in Artificial Intelligence ever since.
