National Geographic Travel Abroad Travel Phone

What a great idea - a cell phone that you can use almost everywhere, always pay the same and have free incoming calls (no expensive roaming charges). That’s exactly what National Geographic is proposing - they teamed up with a company called Cellular Abroad to offer this service and I think it’s a cool concept.
I was checking the product site, and they even rent them, in case you just need for a short period. I did find two negative points though:

  1. Not every single country in the world is covered
  2. The phone itself isn’t very sexy ;)

Still, this is probably the best solution I’ve seen so far to always stay reachable and not spend a fortune. I could seriously consider this for the trip. Is anybody aware of alternatives of this type?

It doesn’t look like the service to Asia is so great.. too bad! $1.00-$2.00 (even in Canada???) per minute is still blazingly more expensive then some of the other local solutions to be had in Asian countries where mobile networks are much more cheap to install than traditional landlines.

I think the best solution is to purchase SIM cards locally. I already receive free incoming calls and have done so in a few other Asian countries. (except wait… nobody calls me because I’m always online calling them!)

Also, if you need a lot of internet access you’re going to want a 3G/EDGE phone for other parts of Asia, where the population is high, the mobile network coverage is excellent, and the rates are cheap because of the above factors.
